Anglican Consultative Council passes environmental resolution

The 17th Anglican Consultative Council, convened last week in Hong Kong, passed an environmental resolution recognizing that there is a global climate emergency and requesting that churches develop action plans and resources for sustainable living.

The resolution also encourages each member church to hold a strategic planning conference on the Sustainable Development Goals and climate change, ensuring the involvement of indigenous, young, and women’s voices.

The resolution asks churches “to identify environmental and climate-related threats in their context and to develop or adapt existing tools on disaster preparedness and mitigation.”

World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, who attended the gathering, expressed his appreciation and support for the resolution.

“Reversing the effects of climate change is a political and moral task we must all take on together,” he said, “and this environmental resolution outlines the kind of urgent adaptation and mitigation measures we must take in order to transform our economic systems now, rather than later.”
