The European Christian Environmental Network (ECEN) seeks a part time Executive Secretary. The position can be based within the home country of the secretary country in Europe. It may be home based or linked to a church’s offices with their country. There is an expectation of some travel, but most meetings would be via the internet.
ECEN is a network of individuals from the ecumenical family of Christian churches across the continent. The aim of the network is to work on the care and protection of creation and towards the vision of a sustainable future, at all levels.
Overview of the role and the expectations:
The successful candidate will demonstrate good communication and organizational skills, be a good networker with people and have a commitment to working collaboratively. They should be able to remain motivated whilst working alone and create a network of contacts across the continent to fulfil the main aims of ECEN. The Executive Secretary should be a member of one of mainline Christian churches in Europe. Basic experience and knowledge of ecumenical relationships is an asset. The working language is English. The Executive Secretary works closely with the ECEN Moderator, communication secretary, ECEN Enabling Team, the leaders of ECEN thematic working groups and the ECEN Support Foundation.
The work of Executive Secretary includes:
- promoting environmental responsibility based on Christian convictions
- pooling and sharing information and expertise through the website, emails and meetings
- raising ecological awareness and commitment of the European churches and supporting ECEN members in developing practical action
- identifying environmental issues arising at the European level and suggesting to the churches ways of dealing with them
- encouraging the dialogue on environmental issues among the different regions of Europe
- stimulating appropriate collaboration with NGOs, the European Parliament other European organisations and institutions.
Areas of responsibility:
Administration
- Overseeing and coordinating ECEN work and activities.
- Be the link between the network and the ECEN Support Foundation. Oversee ECEN finance. Be in contact with ECEN supporters and donors. Be engaged in fundraising, active search for new sources supporting ECEN work from among churches in Europe and other sources.
Communication
- Facilitating contacts with ECEN members and supporters, incl. churches, ecumenical partners and partners from civil society and the dialogue with the EU institutions.
- Together with ECEN communication secretary be responsible for proactive communication, ensure the technical support for ECEN communication.
Organisational work
- Together with leaders of the thematic groups and ECEN Enabling team initiating and overseeing programmatic activities, being responsible for preparation and leadership in ECEN projects, incl. ECEN Assemblies.
- Take the lead in organizing and facilitating ECEN in person and online events.
